••Squeaky...Squeaky...KABOOM...1999 E320 R.I.P.?••

Yup...that's exactly sounded like. A Couple of days ago I started to hear this squeaky sound coming from the front of the car. It was just there. It bothered me enough to have to open the hooh a couple of times. But it was nothing major or super loud.

Today as I parked my car a heard it once again,,,but this time it seemed louder. As I open the hood I hear this crack...as if Ihad dropped a screwdriver into a metal fan...all hell started to break loose and the pungeant smell of burnt rubber filled the air. The inside of the car smells like burnt rubber.

Anyone knows what the heck happened? I am afraid that something major has just happened. I had no message warning come up. The only message I hace had for weeks come and go is....check coolant...but the levels have always been ok. It looked like a malfunctioning error message.

Anyone?

I think Len is on the right track, it could also be the idler pulley, tensioner, water pump, etc. Any of these could make a noise like that in dying it's last breath and then cause a burning rubber smell.

Unless you're really good at DIY you're better off having an indie involved (hands on) at least to help you diagnose it.

If it is the HB then check the HB sticky thread in general to see if it's a suspect unit covered by the recall, if so the dealer should take care of that part for free.

Take care and enjoy the ride,
Greg

I had my idler pulley replaced before the KA-BOOM part happened.

its possible that your waterpump had a leak...i had same problem it was squeeking and what not and coolant level would pop up once in a while next thing u know the car was dried out completely...and when that happens lots of problems happened if you dont get it fixed...most likely it could be a water pump from my opinion
