I am the owner of a 2001, E320. I got caught in the Chicago snow, and shifted the gears back and forth to get out of the snow. Also, I had to keep it out one night in sub below temperature. Now I am hearing wierd sounds. My car seems to sound more like a 4 cylinder , instead of a 6 cylinder. There is a stiff resistance as I drive , and the car hums along, until it finally catches speed . Can anyone tell me what I'm up against!
hopefully is not the transmission. sounds to me like the transmission is in safe(limp) mode. is it shifting in higher rpms than usually, does it feel like it is shifting like a big truck? i don't know the procedure of how to get it out of the limp mode into the normal one. but hopefully is nothing wrong with it. if there is no error messages and it drives fine after you get it out of limp mode, i would say there is nothing wrong with it. (???)
I think you hit it on the head! It seems to be shifting in higher rpms. I believe the trans. is in safe (limp) mode. There are no error messages. I am taking it in tommorrow. I am sure that's what wrong! Thanks.
When you shift to drive from park does it BANG into the gear? When you drive it, is it stuck in 2nd gear and never shifts? If so then it is in limp home mode and will not shift out of 2nd. I think your tranny is fried......shifting from drive to reverse over and over will kill a tranny in a hurry.
