I'va had a K&N drop in air filter and I never had an issue? Car actually felt stronger  I hear it's the full intake tube kits that are not good for the car.
I don't think it's really appropriate to re-hash what has already been discussed ad nauseum in the various forums on this site. There are lots of strong opinions each way.
Do a search, dood, you'll be reading for days. Probably the best place to start is the general forum.

just leave it like it is. change the air filter with the OE brand every other year or so (every 6 months vaccuum the one you have in), or whenever you think it;s very dirty. other than changing the oil/filter and other filters, i would only worry about the other parts only if there is a problem, don't touch them otherwise.
uh oh.....I recall that the K&N filter has a negative causal effect on Depo fited with
RS6 HID projectors. it makes them blink in a pattern which replicates La Cucaracha.
baadd news.
Whether it hurts your MAS or not it still doesn't filter anything and provides NO performance improvement.
The notion that Mercedes--which produces extremely high performance autos for autobahn cruising--somehow makes intake systems that strangle its engines is a pretty dumb notion.

I don't see how an intake setup can strange the engine unless the filter is ultra-thick or the piping is like an exhaust header
