Raymond, I just noticed you have the nice leather key cover. I had trouble putting the new smart key into mine. Did you get a longer screw? I'm asking because I think that part of the new key was too thick for me to secure it properly. It works fine with my original (I think 2nd generation) key.

yeah (leather cover). i just screwed almost fully tight, then backed out enough so
that Smartkey will easily pivot out. oh, i also put tiny BLUE Locktite on thread before
securing so that it won't loosen on it's own. works just fine.

I haven't tried removing the mechanical key yet. It's unusally warm outside and I've been doing a mini-detail on the engine. The gal in the M-B detail shop recommended Dawn using a slightly wet cloth or sponge and I wanted to try it. I think there must be better cleaners for that, but I did mange to get it a little better looking. A friend of mine uses Simply Green All Purpose, and I'm going to try that next.

The key might seem to be expensive but its cheaper than the dealer and arrives in the mail within one week (and I am in Canada). Best of all is that it worked right out of the box.
I stil wanna pay old price! Maybe if all of the forum members got together and started to mail these guys about how pissed off we are about the price raise or how distasteful it was, then maybe they will either lower the price again or do some sort of a group buy. Members who have already gotten these kays are great prices probably don't give a hoot but I ask you guys as well to support us "unlucky' guys also please and send in your e-mails too. I will be sending my e-nail to them today!
thanks!

you can get them for FREE from the dealer if you are still under warranty...
i just got one a couple weeks ago ~ my service consultant ordered my another key - just noted that my old key "wasn't functioning properly"

From a marketing standpoint, there is no compelling reason for OEMPARTSDIRECT
to give any further discount, I opine.
1- they may be one of the rare few who will sell Smartkeys via Internet
2- they have visibility and are connected with established MB dealer
3- the current discount is huge...roughly 50%, over most MB dealers' $2-250+
4- taking all this into consideration, they are not lacking for orders....or hurting
for competition. to a great degree, they've cornered the market in this area
....and will continue to do so as this price is advertised on the various forums
and MB boards.

Whatever price they were selling them for, is their isuue and maybe they loaded the wrong price into the system. The current price at MB without discount is slightly under $200, which is less than the old style. Why would you bombard them with e-mails, it is kind of flawed thinking. It shows that you have never had any pricing experience in the business world. Maybe they will get out of the key business if they dont find it profitable.
Why not bombard MB and threaten never to buy another one of their cars if they dont get their quality up, charge less for replacement parts, and get them to lower hourly rates!
