Alternative Cats--PHOTOS

Per one of your requests, I obtained the part number, and took photos of the new Magnaflow Catalytic Converters.

The Magnaflow part number is 53005. About $115/ea. As you can see, I needed bilateral replacements.

Cheers.

Thanks: GREAT to know about these! I have to ask: do you have to deal with emissions testing where you live?

I have a 2001 E320. It looks as though my pipes are offset. Are yours? Yours look inline in the pictures but I can't really tell.

Fortunately, I don't need to deal with emissions testing.

The 53005 IS listed as "49 States Compliant"

No change, at all, in the performance, but it DOES have a slightly "throatier" sound to it.

Nevertheless it would be illegal for you to remove your cats because emissions equipment is Federally mandated.

And, depending on where you live (anywhere) the Feds may require your city to test for emissions as a condition of receiving Federal funds. It's the case in my town.

this will prob sound stupid to most of you. i know it;s illegal not to have the catalytic converter, but if i removed it from my exhaust, would the car run ok? or is it programed not to run without a catalytic converter? i;m not gonna try it, i just wanted to know.

I think your ECU would have a lot of trouble understanding the readings from the O2 sensors if you removed the catalytic converters. If the exhaust system is anything like my W202 (and I haven't had the 210 long enough to know for sure) there is an O2 sensor on each side of the cat measuring readings. The one on the exit side of the cat wouldn't know what was going on because the readings would be identical to the one on the entry side of the cat. I can see that leading to all kinds of issues.
