Actually these are the SECONDARY Cats. The Lamba probes are FORWARD of these Cats shown, and behind the FIRST STAGE Cats.
Removing the secondary Cats may screw things up due to TOO LITTLE backpressure on the exhaust system. That's my understanding. I am a novice in these matters, like most of us.
This is why they suggest you have a "Flow Test" done on the existing Cats you have, just to make sure the Replacement Cats are of the same "Flow Resistance."
For reference, the Right sided Lambda Probe (O2 sensor) is in the second photo, lying horizontal, and right at the level of the tire. About 3-4 inches long.
that's so much cheaper than OEM.. do you know the part # for 1997 E420? my car's got 109k miles and i'm sure i'll need new cats sometime in the future..

Hey, G-AMG, since these have to be welded in I added it to the FAQ/TIPS sticky. That way I don't have to go searching for it again.
Take care and enjoy the ride,

have to say a very nice piece and well done...thank you for that...I think I could do this at my work...as we have car lifts...so I could do it on a saturday with out much issue...
I have just purchased a 2001 E-320 and one of the catalytic converter...didn't know there was two for each side...but this is the back one...as my guy when he was changing the oil...showed me by banging on it..and you could hear it rattle...
What I have a question on is what is the difference in MB parts and OEM parts...as he told me he wouldn't use OEM parts...said it wouldn't work right with the engine...what is the expereince been??? I thought OEM were approved by MB...

Hi, daniald, and welcome to the forum. Please take a moment to complete your BW profile.
There are actually four cats on your car (and four 02 sensors as well). There is a thread somewhere discussing aftermarket cats wherein Matt posted an interesting PDF to the effect that aftermarket cats were not as good as original. That's a decision you'd have to make for yourself, but cost wise the difference is huge. That might be what your mechanic is referring to.
Also, I'm not aware of any aftermarket cats that are approved for use in CA, only 49-state versions. If you're in CA that might be an issue as well.
means original equipment manufacturer the units from racepages.com are good units. The units from autohausaz.com are oe or oem as well.I would be leery of a mechanic that did not know what oem means----it means it was made by the same company that supplied the same part to mercedes the day the car was assembled .Buy a mercedes mass air sensor from the dealer for $450 plus or buy the oem bosch unit for $170 from autohausaz.com you choose in your case I would choose another mechanic

Usually they just cut out the old one with a saws-all and weld the new one right in. That is faster and easier, thus saving you money, and it makes it easier to assure the proper alignment, which is also important.
