Before shelling out on a new one can I ask for some help to confirm my suspicion/observations?
I have bench-tested the heater fan which works well at many angles, including the angle in which it's mounted in the car, under the glove compartment.
I have checked the voltage into the regulator and when the fan switch is in the 0 position I get 12v. On sweeping through the other positins I get a range of voltages, from 12v to 1v (approvimately).
Despite this voltage appearing, the fan, when connected to the supply via the regulator, doesn't spin.
Have I correctly diagnosed the faulty fan speed regulator? My fan behaves erratically in normal use.
My next question is this. I have read online that you can replace the W210 regulator with an older S Class regulator. Can anyone confirm what the part number for that is?
The 140 regulator trick is for the older 210, for which the regulator, motor and mounting plate were superceded. You can't buy the original parts for these, and the factory solution for either the motor or regulator failure is to replace both, plus the new style mounting plate. Thus the desire to fit something else.
Fortunately, you don't have this problem. While I can't say for certain that your regulator is the problem (although this appears to be the case), you can buy a new regulator for your car.

Hi Matt
Thanks for your reply. I really appreciate it. Do you or anyone else know, I wonder, how the regulator can be tested on the bench using a meter? The reason I'm asking is because I don't really know the normal behaviour of the heating system. For example: I drove the car tonight for an hour or so. When I first got into the car the fan ran for about 30 seconds then stopped no matter the position of the fan speed switch. Then about 5 minutes later it run again, this time until I had finished my journey. Other times it just appears to stop for no reason then start again some minutes or hours later.
Can anyone point me to a post or document that described how the heater fan should behave in normal working?
For example, when on ec mode, does the fan switch off when the cabin reaches a certain temperature? I think it shouldn't because if I need to demist my windows then I'm stuffed.
