Tranny Fluid Change-the Real Deal

Greets All.

I am hoping to put the rumors to rest about recommended oil changes in the 722.6 transmissions.

After the eternity on hold, I finally got through to the Technical Department at Monthership MBUSA, and spoke with Bernard on 1/19/07 at 18:10 Z, and he emphatically denied ANY change in the service interval for the 722.6 Transmission (of which, I suspect most of us have). They ARE designed for service free maintenance.

There IS, though, a recommended change for the 722.9 Transmission at 39K. THIS, I believe, is where the confusion/rumors lies.

Greg's excellent post of what you want to do "for your own vehicle", still holds nicely true.

He did, say, though, that for "severe use" vehicles, he would recommend a change at 100K.

I asked him about the drain (including torq converter) vs. flush method, he chickened out and said, "that one is up to the discretion of the dealership."

Anyway, hopefully this will dispell the myths.

Cheers!

The person you spoke to is a moron.

The boxes are not designed for service free maintainance. That information was only ever given out to help sell the cars to fleet managers, with an eye to reduced service costs.

Changing the ATF is no more difficult than changing the engine oil. Leave it at your peril.
