Auto Selector occasional fault

My E240 Yr2000 has been giving me some troubles starting and displaying correct gear lever position. After a number of attempts to move it up/down the gear positions, I get it to recognise that it is either in P or N and can get it to start. Is this a fault with the gear selector module? or more to do with the Neutral Safelty switch? Once the car is warmed up it behaves and always starts in P and drives normally.
Could this be an electrical problem in the selector (dampness, dry joint?) Any suggestions to fix or is it clearly just replace the auto selector module?

thanks for any assistance with this.
