Hello, I recently took my 2002 E320 4matic wagon on its first long haul. The gas mileage I got was very disappointing.
150 highway miles
Cruise control at 75 miles per hour
70 miles per hour average, per the computer
Only 24 miles per gallon average, according to the computer.
Maybe the low mileage because the drive was mostly "uphill" for 2 hours. But on the return trip, I was practicaly coasting downhill and still only got 24 mpg.
Maybe there's something wrong with the car? It's got 47k miles, coming up on its next Service A. Any ideas?
Maybe it's the 4matic. For all of you in the North East, yeah, it's all my fault that we're getting NO snow. I bought the 4matic hoping to ride safely to work on snowy January roads. Murphy's Law got the best of me again.

I have been wondering about my E320 (not 4matic), and my problem is what I am getting driving around town. I have been getting between 15 and 20 MPG.
On a 120 mile trip on I-95 ending in Fall River, I got an average 31.45 miles per gallon. I was driving at a cruise speed of mostly 65 MPH. And yes, just about everyone was passing me, but I was determined to stay within the speed limit. Of course in your case you were doing more than 65 MPH. Maybe that had something to do with the 'poor mileage'.
I am interested in hearing what others are getting.
On the 01 E320 4M that I had and the W211 E320 4M (05) that I currently have I get about 26 on the road and about 19/20 around town. Thats at 70 to 80 MPH. These are sedans and not wagons if that makes a difference? Recently completed a 420 mile round trip to way out on the island in NY and that was the number.
You're doing better than I usually do... usually 22-24 on 75-80MPH highway trips. The only improvement I've seen is if i inflate the tires to the max recommended, that gets 1-2mpg extra. My car has a new airflow sensor, cps and is up to date on maintenance so i don't know what's up...
@gyesi, you're right, going 65 will get better mileage than 75-80...i will often get better mileage on 50-60mph 2 lane roads than the 80mph highway trips
That number does sound low to me. Our 2000 E320 4Matic Wagon gets 22 mpg overall, which is mainly stop and go highway rush hour commuting. I'd expect at least 26-27 mpg under the conditions you noted. One question for you: how loaded up was the car? If it was just you on the trip then yeah, your mileage sucks. But if you had four people and a trunk full of luggage, it wouldn't be as bad as it looks.
01 E 320 2wd. Wagon, 22 around town no real traffic, 26/27 on the road 65/70 with sutcases and cooler full of stuff, 25/26 in excess of 80. No roof bars! is your switch set on S or W
The ML had a better trip /fuel computer!

.
DON'T TRUST THE COMPUTERS.
I don't have computer on my 4-Matic wagon, but the one on wife ML is off by like 20%.
Than 24 mpg would be excellent mileage on my wagon, since I average slightly above 20 on freeway driving. Than my average is above 80 mph.
Try to drive slower for fuel economy. I had my wife driving my wagon, while following me towing a boat at about 60 mph. The mileage skyrocketed and I estimate for that part of the trip went over 30 mpg.
