I have a 1999 E320 and wanted to know how much a tune up usually costs and what are the parts that are replaced during a tune up. I have never gotten a tune up for any of the cars that I have driven, so I wanted to get some feedback from you guys so I can be educated on what exactly I should look out for.
Are you going to do it yourself?
If yes then it would cost you approx $130+:
Spark plugs: 12 pc. ~$80 (Bosch F 8 DPP332)
Fuel Filter: ~$40 (Mann)
Air Filer: ~20 (Mann)
Oh, thats it? I thought a tune up consisted of changing some other parts also. I know how to change the air filter and I believe I can get some help with changing the spark plugs from a friend, but I don't know how to change the fuel filter, is it easy as changing the air filter, I'm guessing not. Would you happen to know of a site where it shows how to DIY?
Also how much would it be if I just let a mechanic do the whole thing?
If you pay someone to do all of this you're probably looking at a grand depending on where you are. Plugs can go to $500 all by themselves if you take it in.
Plugs are not terribly easy, but you have to be sure to have the boot removal tool or they're simply impossible.
I'd suggest you first pull one plug just to take a look at it. These typically go to 100,000 miles, so examine one and see if you really need to worry about them.
Take care and enjoy maintaining the ride,
Greg

The main reason that I want to get this tune up is because I have been getting the "Check Engine" light come on and off and my car also slows down rapidly and all of a sudden goes very fast. Could this be fixed with a tune up or could this be because of something else.
I just want to clarify and verify that I should only look for a air filter, fuel filter and spark plugs when buying the parts myself and expecting only these things to be changed when taking it in to a mechanic. (I'm a student so I can't afford to be ripped off... again) :-D
Also is there a trusted site or store where I can purchase these parts?

Thank you again for all your responses.
The three places I most often buy replacement / OEM stuff are:
The first two do free shipping at the $50 price point.
That said, don't start replacing things. If you're getting an intermittent CEL it's not likely to be any regular tune-up item. Rather, there are scores of sensors in the car, whenever any one of them is a little out of range eventually the CEL will come on. What that means is that the computer has stored a trouble code, so take the car to a shop and let them download the codes (even when the light is out quite often there are still codes stored in the ECM). Some of the chain-type auto parts stores will also do this -- for free. Once you have the codes, jump on the web or search the forum and see what the codes mean. Replace the out-of-range part if it's within your skillset, and bada boom, you're all set.
