I was wondering if anyone has changed their license plate bulbs and could point me down the right path? Do I need to pull the exterior trunk lid trim (remove the tree screws) or do I need to go in from the trunk and peel back the trunk liner? Or, is there another way? THis is about the seventh bulb I will have replaced in the past year. It's funny how they all go at once.
Hi,
Strange. I have the same problem with the left bulb. sometimes it works and then it doesn't. Yes, You need to go in from the trunk and peel back the trunk
liner. Cannot explain why it is acting like that.
Thanks Shed, This is my first plate bulb replacement. I've replaced both front parking lamps, a headlight and two taillights. Its a 98 with about 90000 miles. If you have changed it, can you tell me which end of the liner I should start dissasemblying? It looks like I should start at the bottom of the lid underneath the bulb housing. But the liner looks like it fits snuggly under the trunk latch housing. I am afraid I may not be able to put it back cleanly.
I have a 97 E-420. When I replaced my license plate bulb I had to remove that strip that covers the bulbs (forgot what its called), located on the outside. Two screws hold it in place. Believe its a philips head. Then I removed liner in trunk lid, reach in and squeezed the clips on both ends of bulb housing, which holds it in place and removed housing. Switched bulbs and installed in reverse order.
Thanks for all your help. I was able to get at it by removing the trunk liner. There are about a dozen plastic clips that need to be removed. The clips have two parts a pin and an anchor. Both need to be removed. I used a putty knife to pry up the clips. Remove the pin first and then the anchor.
I switched out the bulbs in the sockets without removing the exterior trunk trim bulb housing (the thing with the three screws). The whole process took me about a half hour to complete, so I replaced both bulbs while I was there.
The liner has a pretty firm backing and went back in place nicely. I reinstaled it using the existing plastic clips.
I'll have to think about the LED light modification- looks like more work than its worth to me. I really was most interested in shutting off the defective lamp message on the console.
i would suggest holding off on the LED bulbs in back unless you realize the gamble.
there are high # of reports of premature failure and I've not see this isolated to
a particular manuf/vendor/model bulb. as long as it's LED festoon cluster, there is
a healthy chance failure.
