mobil 1 oil question.

i have mainly seen mobil 1 0W-40 recommended on these boards.
my owners manual also mentions mobil 1 15W-50 as being acceptable.
is it ok to use this formula?
this is for a 2002 E320.
thanks

I looked over some papers left by the previous owner in my 1998, and on two occasions, the dealer put in Castrol 20/50. Wonder why?

My car has Mobil 1 0W40 now, but the service advisors told me that Daimler is now recommeding 5W40, also Mobil 1 brand. One of them said the reasoning is that the 5W40 holds up better/longer.

I'd be wondering the same thing. Why don't you make a quick call to that dealer to ask why? If you do, please share the info with us.

I asked MBoA about using Synthetic Mobil1 5W30 in M112 . They told me that it is OK, if you cannot find 0W40. Major thing about oil. It has to be synthetic.
BTW, Only 0W40 meets specification Mercedes MB 229.5.

There is now a MB 229.51 but I do not know for which cars they recommend it.

I will not surprise if in next MB car generation Mercedes will required special super duper quattro synthetic genuine Mercedes engine oil and will not accept any other oil brands.

Just read the label. If it says that it meets MB spec 229.5, you can put it in.

There is NO conventional oil that meets this spec.

The only vis of Mobil1 I've personally seen that has that on the label is the 0W40. I would bet that the new 5W40 meets the 229.51 spec, so it would be okay. (The DIY oil change post I did has a picture of the label on the 0W40 so you can see exactly what you're looking for.)

If you want to look at other weights, other synthetic manufacturers have some varied vis' that meet the 229.5 spec.

I've long been a Mobil1 fan, it costs a bit more in that 0W40 weight but I really don't mind with the long change intervals. Plus if you have a shucks/kragen/checker near you they often run coupons for $1 off per quart, which makes it about the price of the 5W30 at Costco.

Take care and enjoy maintaining the ride,
Greg
