Install subwoofer under rear seats in 1999 E-320?

I'm planning to change my stock head unit in my 1999 E-320, mainly to add bluetooth capability. The new head unit will have a sub pre-out and it should be fairly easy to wire up a subwoofer. I plan to keep the Bose amplifier and speakers. However, I would like to improve the bass somewhat, and I am thinking about getting this subwoofer with built-in amp:

Does anyone have any comments on whether it would be OK for me to just put this subwoofer under the rear seats (where the battery is located)? I would be able to easily tap the battery directly for power and would only need to run an RCA cable from the head unit to this location. I supposed I would need to place the subwoofer outside of the insulation in this compartment. Maybe I would also need to remove the plastic cover (used for accessing the battery), to let some air in?

I'm not an audiophile and would appreciate any comments on this. I was surprised that I couldn't find any mention of such a subwoofer placement in a search of the forums. Maybe there's a good reason why this is not a good location for subwoofer placement? Thanks for any help.

I think you'd be better off putting that under the front seats instead. With such a small sub, I doubt that you'd be able to hear it if you put it under the rear seats.

Another solution is to put one or two small free air subs in the extra speaker cutouts in the back shelf. Only two of the four rear speaker holes are in use with the stock bose system. (In that case, you could put a small amplifier under the rear seats.)

Thanks for the reply. I will take another look at possibly putting it under the front seats. It didn't look like there was enough clearance when I checked before--this unit is 4" deep. However, I remember reading a review from someone who placed the same unit under the seat in a Porsche 911.

With regard to using the pre-cut speaker hole in the rear deck, I would prefer to not cut the panel of the deck. But I'll keep that in mind. Thanks for reminding me of this option. Does anyone know why Mercedes has the two extra speaker cutouts in the back shelf?
