E430 Transmission acting up!

Today i arrived at work and the tranny was still working normal, as i was driving home i first noticed a mechnaical strange noise behind the music so i turned off the radio and yea a noise that kept rising with the revs AND the GEAR WAS STUCK IN 2nd.

OK i was getting rather pissed and tried to manually switch to an other gear with little success though.

I drove the car home and turnedit off and restarted the engine and poof it worked like a dream again...
WTF!!??
I drove about 50km after the incident and it hasnt reoccured again, even put the pedal to the metal a few times and it works just great.

Can this be something serious or just a minor glitch in the gearbox or wherever ?

The tranny oil was changed about 10.000 km ago.

What do you guys think?

Thank you in advance

what yr is your car, and how many miles? how many times has the ATF been replaced?

on some high mileage MBs and BMWs, it's been known that a fresh ATF flush will kill the tranny. hope yours is ok!!

why would flushing the ATF be bad for the transmission?

Today i had no problems at all, ive driven now ~150 miles after the hickup and no sign of any trouble, i went to the local benz dealer and he sayed that this tranny model does theese things sometimes....i didnt really belive him, i think he just sayed it to ease my mind.

Well, lets see...i hope its all ok now...

Did any light come on. It sound like it went into limp home mode. Limp home mode allows secound gear only. You should run a short test on contol modules. That will show you if anything is off. Checking trans adaptation data in trans control module is the best bet. Shift times will tell you if you tranny is getting to worn. It sounds like you tranny is ok. MY e430 acts funny sometimes but the dealer checked it out and its fine at 89k miles.

Thnx for the replies guys, the ATF level was indeed a bit low,the car was in maintenance today and they added some, works way smoother now.

Glad it seems better, but if it's low, then you need to find out where the ATF is going. There has been an issue with it leaking out around the O rings of the big electrical connector.
