Hey all, I just bought a 98 E320 4 matic wagon 120Kmi but no books or records. The guy is supposed to send them to me. I hope. I can't figure out what the w/s switch is for next to the shift. Also I looked at the post on oil change the guy says 0w45 mobil 1 is recommended but under what temp conditions?
Drove the car from Pittsburg to Philly ran great 26mpg and used no oil. Can anybody tell me if these have any issues like the timing chains in my 560's that need to be addresed
thanks
thanks for the qick reply do you know what the logic is for starting in 2nd gear
Welcome to the forum, rsmith.
I'm going to guess you've never lived in snow country.
Starting in first gear is when the greatest amount of torque can be applied to the wheels.
Torque is an enemy in poor traction situations.
Starting in second gear lessens the likelihood of wheelspin.
Take care and enjoy the Florida weather!

When the "W" switch position is used, there is also a higher ratio for reverse.
In other words, you have two speeds for reverse.
Don't try to use the higher ratio when backing up hill, as it seemed
to me that my E-300 DT was staining when I tried this.
The trans did not like it, so I stopped doing it, and would always throw
the switch back to the "S" position prior to engaging reverse.
If you change positions of the switch after you are already in reverse, nothing changes.
You must position the W/S switch first prior to placing the lever in "R."
When using this feature in any of the forward positions except 1, you'll be able
to force an early shift from first to second speed by throwing the switch to "W."
Your manual should explain all of this if and when you get it.
