"1999 E320 Wagon 93K, Changed my plugs (NGK 7090) last week - first time I had ever changed spark plugs on any vehicle. Took about 3.5 hours but I was taking my time. I didn't run into any major snags - the old plugs were really screwed in tight though. The Spark Plug tool sold by Oh Lord was critical. It really made pulling the boots off a snap and what became quickly apparent was its usefulness getting the boots back on in the confined space. The drivers side plugs look more difficult but they were actually the easiest. My electrodes had worn out to the point that they were all showing a gap of about .45 (vs the recommended .39/.40) but the car had been running fine."
I did the spark plugs on a 99 E320 with over 110K miles. It was never changed before. The fine platinum tips are all gone. It is amazing that the car still runs with the old plugs.
Thanks for OhLord's tool, the boots pops right off but sometimes it is hard to push it back on, especially when space is tight. What I did is to use some pivot support (socket extension of various length, head of rubber mallet etc) against the side wall and use leverage to push it in. When the angle is right, it push in very easily and I can hear it click. Hope this helps.
message and shipped it out today.
Tips from Shane above are and should be noted
the 17mm tool when turned the opposite open end and levered against the boot metal collar pops it back on and you can feel the positive pop of the boot clipping back onto the plug ensuring no misfires.
Plus he used the ngk7090 single side electrode plugs which are about as close to oem as you can get and only cost $2.79 each.
do not use anti seize and don't use multi tip plugs. ohlord
pm me when you get the tool and we can talk on the phone about some easier tips to save your knuckles and speed up the process.
