I had my E280's transmission rebuilt last month. It was well worth the expense, as it shifts smoothly now. However, I had my first long trip this weekend and then noticed that the cruise control is erratic. Sometimes it refuses to engage, or it will engage but then disengage by itself after a while. Then there were also times where it worked perfectly for long periods, but would then suddenly just disengage and refuse to re-engage.
ok, I am not shure if this type has a separate cruise control amplifier, it could also be that the cc amplifier is integrated in the ecu. When this is the cause I would suspect that the part of the ecu that controls the cruise control is failty. But he has first to check al switched (brake, cloutch, on/off etc), that could ofcourse also explain it. But the VDO systems in Mercedes with this kind of behaviour has often problems with the amplifiers and these can be remanufacterd, see the link as mention before.

I think you need to check the brake switch first because it's the cheapest (around $15-20), I had a W210 97 before and I had a similar problem in my cruise control, the next to check if not the brake switch is the accelerator which's underneath the air intake, in this model (M104 engine) it's the most part that can go wrong in cruise control parts but it's a bit expansive that's why I didn't do in my old car, in fact I sold the car, anyway I believe in (W210) 96-97 models they still have a module for cruise control in the ECU box, but from 98 and above it's integrated in the ECU of the car after they introduced the V6 engine (M112).
Thanks for the replies on my post. My trusty mechanic has diagnosed the control unit (arm & switch) as the culprit. Cost me about $130 to replace. I'm picking the car up this afternoon & will let you know whether the problem is solved.
