it's an all wheel drive variant of the basic platform...
PROS: it makes for a very stable and sure-footed tourer in inclimate weather
CONS: limited in the areas of customization like lowering suspension and aftermarket wheel configuration (CAN NOT us a staggered wheel set-up)

Agreed. 4MATIC is awesome in the snow, but it's about 1MPG worse than the RWD cars. The 4MATICs in the newer cars (i.e. the W210s) are much more reliable than those in the the older W124s.
Love the extra safety of 4-wheels and also makes you confident with going into places the others would not go.
We had a situation on Nevada desert, when the storm had small river crossing the road. Several cars stopped there and watched what was going on, while I, seeing a truck who crossed it in a distance -without much of slowing down just went thru.
1" higher suspension make getting in/out easier.
Bad part? $1200 for front axle replacement, because they don't sell CV joints alone.
