Just removed mine yesterday. I purchase radio keys from dealer ($8). Those keys slide into bottom of radio, they snap into place and then you just slide radio out. Once radio is out put your hand in and press down on the snap holding part into place and slide out the whole part (don't forget to unplug unit), you will have shift the shifter back so it can slide straight out. Once the whole part is out loosen the plastic snaps holding the cell phone unit and wiggle out unit. Then just slide part back in and your done. It looks ugly seeing all those wires in the back. I think there is an empty compartment that can be purchased to fill slot. Gonna look into that. Good luck
That is an ulgy and useless part. My '96 is wired for a cell phone in the center console, which is also useless, but at least you can't see it.
If that has a wooden cover, I would almost bet that it's the same cover as on my car, which has a nice slot just the size to hold my sunglasses. If so, the cover and the plastic mount around it comes out with a single clip, also accessable through the hole for the radio.
If I'm right, you could easily make something to fill that pocket if you can't find it for a reasonable price.
Thank you for the info. From your comments re: visible wiring, I won't try to remove the unit unless/until I can replace the void with something useful! please let me know what you find out.
Thx again for your help.
Is your telephone working?
I know, that by the law, even without a service each working cellphone suppose to connect you with 911.
Mine says "the server is busy"
Would be nice to keep it in the car for real emergencies.
I have the same old worthless Motorola phone in my 98 E320. I have never tried 911 on it. I am about to tear mine out too. Might be nice to have as an emergency, but we always have cell phones now.

what about the cell phone wiring inside the armrest on the later w210's? besides just randomly pulling out wires and the cell phone cradle, is there an easy way to get rid of this junk so I can use it for storage?
