Recently the steering wheel on my 97 e320 has been squeeking. I noticed that it started squeeking after I had left the car in the hot sun all day & the temp in the car must have risen considerably. Any advice on how to keep it from squeeking? (Besides wd40)
Thanks!

Mine did the same thing; I believe it's a known problem, and the dealer sprays lubricant around the steering column seal / area near the firewall.

I had the same problem, 1.5 years ago, on my 01 E320. Dealership said I needed new control arms, I believe that is what it was - it was under warranty.
- Had them replaced, noise came back 4 to 6 months later.
- Took it back in during last service and it stopped. It has been about 5 or 6 months since service and it has started again.
HMMMMM
They may be simply placing oil drops and it works for another 6 months!! I can not get a real answer from the dealership!
I had the same problem 1 year ago with mine, kept going back to the dealer for lubricant around the steering column seal and the noise kept coming back after a month. Finally they decided to replace the rack and pinion. It has been a year now and the noise hasn't came back.
the squeeking steering anomaly seems to be quite the recurring theme for W210s
but for a variety of reasons. I can prob come up with the TSB for your model/year
if you PM me the info.
My '02 E320 does the same thing. I read about it in the common problems section of www.eclassbenz.com. They say it is a worn bushing on the power steering box. The bushing can be replaced, although some dealers may try to sell you a new power steering unit.

I had a feeling it might have been something in the power steering box and not the rack and pinion. The service guy at my dealer thinks it might be the rack and pinion and wanted to replace that, but since my car was still under warranty I just asked the service guy to replace the power steering box too at the same time they replaced the rack and pinion. In my opinion by having the power steering box replaced solved the squeeky noise and not the rack and pinion.

i have this problem in my 430. of course i want to try using a silicone spray on it before i take it anywhere. where exactly do i spray, or is it not accessible unless i take the wheel off?
My steering wheel started squeaking as well just recently... Same as fju2112, I would like to try spraying silicone or wd40 on the wheel column... How do I access it? TIA.
