For those with pre-98 W210, what engine oil do u use?
MB recommends synthetic on 98+ W210s but their wording isn't clear on 97 and earlier W210s. I think pre-98 W210s were filled w/ dino oil from the factory as well.
Which oil do you use, what's your OCI, and current mileage? Plz indicate year & model of W210 you own - thanks!

I had a '98 E430 and the service manager had to check about with which oil the engine came into the USA. The reason for this, was that MB changed mid-year from conventional to synthetic. MY '97, if his info was correct, must have been "dino" oil as lkchris called it. Personally, I would use the originally installed oil, but there is a pile of evidence stating that synthetic is significantly better.

If you've ever opened up an engine that's been on synthetic oil, you wouldn't ask if there was an advantage. There's no sludge build-up at all. The metal parts inside look like they came out of the pressure washer.
Even synthetic oil is pretty cheap compared to the other costs of running the car, but still, it's your choice.
I'm running dino oil in my diesel, but changing it very often. The price of the filters with more often changes completely wipes out any savings of not running synthetic, but I have no bypass and the soot has to come out sometime. Still, I'm considering going to synthetic without extending the service interval.

For 1998 and earlier, I use 5W40 Synthetic with a minimum of MB229.1 rating or higher. For 1999 and especially those with FSS, use 5W30 MB229.5 for non-AMG and I use 0W40 with MB229.5 for AMG models.
Our 99 model ML320 come with dino oil and had dino oil changes for about 3 years, before MB changed the policy.
We didn't notice any negative effects and truck still runs flawlessly,
Now synthetics are so cheap, that I put them even in my carburated boat.
