Hey. I'm looking to buy a 2002 E320 wagon. But today I found a pretty clean 2000 E320 with 72k Miles and Navigation in Dark blue/grey.
I test drove it and have a couple observations that perhpas some of you may help me with.
1. IS the 2000 year model much different than the 2002? It felt a little slower, but I'm not sure.
2. The window switches seemed to need a couple presses before the windows went down. Is this typical?
3. The navigation seemed nice. Do people here like it?
4. The shifter seemed to have a hard time moving from D to "-" and "+". In other words, while driving, I tried down shifting by moving the lever to the left, but instead of going down to 4th or 3rd gear, it would momentarily show 4 and then it'd go back to D by itself. Is this a defect?
5. The headlamp covers were clear. I've noticed some have ribbed lenses. Why does this one have clear lense covers?
Thank you for helping a noob. I'm a moderator over at M3 forums. Anyone need a hand over there, and I'd gladly repay the favor.
I can address a few of your questions I hope--
1) The 2000 year has the same engine/drivetrain as the 2002 models, so there shouldn't be a power difference.
2)The windows definitely shouldn't need a few presses to go down, there should be two obvious detents in the switch though- a light press and it's not auto down/up, and a hard press does the auto down/up. Maybe a spill in the console, linked to #4. Pry the trim up from around the shifter lever (just the little plastic trim piece, there are 4 tabs holding it down, one each in the front and rear corners) and see if you notice any spill evidence hiding under this trim piece. A serious spill in the console can be a $1000 repair, b/c the transmission electronics are under there.
3)I don't have navigation, so I can't say...
4)There's likely something wrong with the shifter, because it should stay in the gear you put it in-- sounds like maybe someone spilled in the console and shorted out one of the switches (?).
5) While I'm not sure at all, my guess is that the lens difference might be attributed to the difference between cars w/ xenon lights and standard lights. You might also be thinking about some cars with aftermarket mods for projector headlights, which have clear lenses.
This sounds like a car that you might want to pass up. There are plenty of W210 wagons out there in many color combos, so don't feel like you have to jump at this one...

+1 After 2004 VW 1.8GTI , I felt my self like barge captain. But it is different kind of car. Unfortunately MB didn’t have W210 wagons with M119 engine (E430 or E500) and if you consider to buying W210 wagon it is that.

I guess windows and sunroof resynchronization could fix it (this issue appears when battery was unplugged or replaced without windows/sunroof resynchronization.

I don't use it. Definitely maps has to be renewed. One more things - System could find the street, but you couldn't find and show you number house on street... I think that for 2000 it was great, but now it looks so basic even primitive.

No. It will not switch the gears. It will just limit number of top gear to using. I mean, if you see 3 on dashboard. It is mean that transmission will not use 4 and 5-th gears. It is not tiptronic.

Probably lenses have been replaced or retrofitted. Take a look at headlights. Do they have projectors?

1. my 97 E420 I recently bought also has a prob of driver's side window not going down with single detent but it will go down with double click. previous owner said he spilled something.
2. MB Command/NAV - MB and BMW have the worst NAV systems. they are CD based and REALLY slow. but i guess it's better than no nav at all.

Should be NO Difference between the Years in Performance as its the Same V6
The Window switch has TWO detents one for normal use and the second for auto
The CD base Navi/Comand is ok ..
One can Upgrade it to a Euro Nav..with TV Tuner..
The Trans Will go into S mode via the toggle switch on the console
Then Try to shift it..in the S mode it WILL start in First gear
Not Sure what you are talking about as mercedes offers TWO headlight s on the W210s Normal Bulb Type and Xenon Headlights
Items to look for are
RUST..Doors/tail gate Front spring perch/mounts
Seat rails loose
A/C
Trans Leaks and shifting See if the trans has been serviced as the Life time fluid is a JOKE!
Cat Converters rattle and break up inside
Other than that a GOOD PPI should catch most all the normal Items
As for the headlights, must be the xenon option. I looked up the VIN and one of the original options was xenon lights on that car.
There was definately something wrong with the shifting when using the "+" and "-". It wouldn't stay in any number, it would just bounce back to D. I'll talk to them about it. Perhaps they can get that fixed before hand--it's at a dealership...
I'm gonna go over and look at it again. They want $17.8k, but are accepting lower offers. I was thinking more like $13.5k...
