If your car has the original locks, take the VIN number and proof of ownership to the Mercedes dealer and they can order any key you want. Been a while since I got one, but would guess the price is between $20 to $30 per key. You could also try locksmiths, but not sure if your car has a specialized computer-chipped key or not. You might be stuck going to the dealer.

I think the '97 is the same as my '96. Not a smart key, but the local dealer told me that a non-IR key was not available.
I paid $240 including local sales tax, and the first one they got me would not synchronize. I took it back and they replaced it with a working transmitter.
depends where u live in new york city its like $187 for the key, but i have a 96 benz and i have the original factory key and honestly some guy at a local key shop was able to make the copy of the key for like 10 bucks, but the key only works one way, u have to put it on certain side so it opens the car or turns it on....but the best thing is to get it from the dealer
I have the same problem, got only one key when purchased the car.
I called like 5-6 dealers around LA / Orange County, CA and the range quoted were between $184-$210 before tax. A local locksmith was able to cut a non I/R key for me for $20 but it's not able to turn the ignition, only good for the doors. He said it's because the ignition should communicate with the I/R key, but I don't think this is the case. Please correct me if I am wrong, the car is 1997 E420 where the I/R is only to open doors/engine kill.
Thanks
On electronic smartkeys, I read somewhere on this forum that you should always tell the dealer you want an additional key, not a replacement. May make a difference in price and I think you are only alloted so many replacements. Could be wrong.
I don't know when they started putting the transponders in the keys. This is used by the drive authorization system (DAS). My '96 uses a different system, which lacks the transponder. But the dealer will know, based on your VIN. It's entirely possible that the car does communicate with your key, but it is a different function from the IR transmitter, and not at all related.
