Hello,
On my 99 E-329 (52,000) miles - I hear a whizzing sound when turning the steering to left or right.
I have had a "squeeking" sound 2 years ago and the dealer had then replaced the rack and pinion but this sound coming now is quite different - it seems that something needs to be lubricated and something is rubbing against plastic making this rubbing sound.
Any idea or suggestions as to what could this be??
There is a rubber boot in the fire wall which the steering shaft goes through. Now you can lube the inside of this boot, but it is kind of hard. good luck.
Thanks for your response can you please let me know how to do this. Is there a procedure or some pictures that will guide me through.
Please send it to me.
Sorry i don't have any pics. What I could tell you is that you get it from the bottom of the car. Look for where the steering shaft goes to rack and pinion.
follow the shaft to the fire wall. There is a little plate covering this boot. They are 8mm hex screw. After you get to the boot. Your going to need to pry it away from the shaft some. Then add grease. This is the hard part because of the tight area. I suggest having some one turn the wheel when you adding the grease. Oh ya use grease that will be ok with rubber. Not potroleum base.
thanks so much for your response - I wish you could please tell me some more details as I am still not too sure on how to do this - it seems complicated. Can you please give me some more details so I amy be able to do this.
no offense, but if you dont understand what he just meant by that description, you probably should not attempt it yourself in the first place. Just my 2 cents.
I too had the infamous squeeky noise from the steering wheel about a year ago. It sounds almost exactly as described here. My problem turned out to be a small grinding noise inside a circular metal plate right inside the steering wheel. That was determined by a non-dealer Mercedes mechanic in Austin, Texas. He lubricated the part and the noise stayed for about a week but then totally disappeared! I haven't heard it in a year now. It used to totally annoy me. So you could have this problem.
The point I am making here is there might be several reasons for your problem: The one I described is one, the boot is another. I remember the mechanic checking the boot and quickly determined that it was not the problem. So before you engage in lubricating the boot, have someone steer the wheel in both directions and get under the wheel and up close to the firewall, where the boot is, to see if the noise is coming from there.
