Wondering if anyone has had this problem? my car is a 2001 E55
I previously posted about my rear brakes locking up and smoke coming from the rear brakes. The problem went away for several days but it's back. Yesterday the car drove fine to work, on the way home after sitting 8 hours they locked up. Today it drove fine most of the day and then locked up once again. Some observations, vehicle is stock including wheels:
1) I now know they are going to lock up because the brake pedal gets very hard and just a tap is like full braking
2) days when they don't lock up the pedal travel is normal and it is easy to modulate the braking
3) the abs, traction control, and another light light up, dash reads 3 malfunctions
4) remove ignition key and re-insert , zero malfunctions
I'm getting tired of leaving my car in strange places when the brakes randomly lock, does anyone have any ideas before I cave in and take it to the shop? I have a feeling this is going to get expensive.
Sorry to hear you're still having problems. I haven't heard of this in the E55 (or the non-AMG variants, for that matter). That said, I had a friend with a V*W (can't recall the model) that did something similar, it also triggered an ABS warning but I don't think the light ever went off. The diagnosis (or at least the theory they gave him) was an impurity in the ABS that was blocking a valve or sticking or something. They ended up having to change the ABS unit itself, it was pretty expensive. (This is one reason I accept the indie and dealer admonishment to flush the brake*fluid every couple of years.) Do you have a good indie? Maybe just a flush will take care of yours, here's hoping. Post back up and let us know the outcome.
Sounds like a malfunction in your ABS system. I would be taking it to an indie as soon as possible, or the dealer if you have an extended warranty to have it looked at. I'm sure one of the malfunction codes that keeps coming up will tell you what is wrong.

Yah I gave up, I'm a pretty competent home mechanic but this one is over my head. I took it to a friend who works in Mercedes dealer service department, hope to hear something tomorrow. At least the parts will be at dealer cost.
