Had CEL disgnosed to bad MAF. Just installed a new one today. Other than taking the car in for the code to be cleared, will the system eventually work its way off? I know this is near impossible to estimate, but about how long in regular day-to-day driving.
BTW, for those interested:
MY01 E430: Bosch P/N = 0-280-217-811
MB P/N = 113-094-0048
The darn thing cost about $470.00 in my area.

Just had an MAF installed in my '00 E320, 68K miles, also based on CEL. The unit cost $388 at the dealer, not counting labor. The dealer said this was fairly common around that mileage... seems to me it should last longer than that! I don't know if they reset it or not, but my CEL went off right away.
Did you buy yours aftermarket Bosch or dealer MB? I've heard that with care, these units can be cleaned sucessfully using a soft clean cloth ... anyone have any luck doing that?

Yep, me too. I think these things should las a bit longer (based on my experience with MAF from the Japanese cars!!!). Mine went out at 65+K. The new unit was from the dealer - after adding shipping, and taxes in some cases, it was just simpler to get it from the dealer.
They reset your code since it was installed by the dealer. I know for certain that if the car is not driven for a long while - like a 4dys to a week, the CEL will go out and come back on after sufficient data has been collected. I may just wait a week b4 driving the car.
As for cleaning, it's delicate and I don't think a soft clean cloth will do it. Think a cotton swab instead. These units are the hot wire type and they are extremely delicate to handle. I have the old one I took off and I can't wait to begin experimenting!!!! What do I have to loose?? I plan to use an alcohol soaked cottom swab to do the cleaning, extremely carefully. Then reinstall it (after the CEL light goes off) to see if the light comes back on.
Just an FYI for you diesel owners (not sure if it applies to the gas versions?), but the MAF part for the new CDI works in our 210 chassis diesels. Cost is $76 vs. $300+ for the supposedly correct part. Part #A611094048.

In order to clean it corretly, the insert must be removed from the MAF (using a T20 temper-wrench - ACE store carries it for $1.49). Use a MAF cleaner (Pep Boys has it) to spray on it. BTW, Instead of buying a new AMF sensor, you can only buy a new insert from Bosch (around $129 - $160) to replace the old one. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Merce...20030417QQrdZ1

Now you tell me. Godd information though. Like I said, I'll clean the unit I took off and try it. I didn't even know the insert could be purchased separately. Excellent info.

The MAF issue has been discussed many times in this forum. I believe (have not tried yet) the insert on the R170 will work with W210's and Bosch brand is highly recommended.
The insert will work. You can buy a whole brand new Bosch unit through Partstrain.com for $140. They use a bunch of different names ie. mercedes-benz-auto-parts.com or somethn flike that. They are pretty cheap on other items as well. Very quick shipping on East coast.
Thanks fellas. Turns out the system does learn - juast after approximately 400 miles of driving, the light is out, and it seems like it's out for good. You know, I probably wouldn't have attempted this without help from this forum!!! Thanks everyone. I still plan to get the Bosch insert - this problem will certainly come back in the future!!!
