I just bought a '96 E300D and noticed the display lighting for the climate control does not work (assuming it's supposed to be visible in the dark). I've searched and found posts that refer to a "key" for removing the climate control chassis and locating a bulb(s) on the bottom of the chassis, but I cannot find such a key. It is not in the toolkit that is wrapped in a cloth in the trunk.
Where can I buy one - and is there a common part number/name to search for when ordering?
I finally replaced the bulb for my climate control, but the light is much different than the light for the stereo. Is this normal or have I purchased the wrong bulb. BTW, the bulb was bought from a Benz dealer.
The climate-control pushbutton unit uses an incandescent lamp, like the rest of the dash lighting, but unlike the radio in my '96. It's lit with yellow LEDs, and looks just a bit different from everything else.
I also need to replace the bulbs which illuminate the climate control.
I called my local dealer to purchase the radio removal key, but I was told that they do not sell them due to security issues (people stealing radios, I guess). He said I could probably find the key online.
Anyone know where I can purchase this key online?
Also, I've heard there are three bulbs behind the climate control cluster. If so, I figure I ought to replace them all while I'm back there. Can anyone confirm how many bulbs are behind the climate control cluster?
I just got my W210 radio removal key (also for climate control removal) at SamstagSales.com for $12.50. It works great! The description is "Mercedes 963-589-01-05-00 Becker Radio Tool". Herb
