Auxilliary fans

This is an fyi note. I asked a question a while back about whether or not the auxilliary fans (1997 E320) should resist turning by hand. Mine were hard to turn. The answer, as several suggested, is no. I replaced the tandem unit last week and now all is fine. The point of the note is to let you know that this unit can be replaced from the front. At first I thought it could not be done that way but then I spotted that the frame piece going across above the radiator comes off with four bolts. Also be sure your new unit turns in the proper direction (blowing air into the condenser). My new unit ran backwards when first installed. The male plug on the unit comes apart and the leads can be reversed.

I appreciate all the help I've gotten from this forum!

No. I traced the fan wires back to a plug in an electrical module in the area behind the under hood fuse box (you have to remove the cover of the fuse box to see this area) but never found a fuse or a relay. Must be done internally. I tested my fans by jumping from the battery and they ran fine - but this is not the whole story. Evidently they drew so much current that the normal system would not allow them to run. They were hard to turn by hand. After replacing - all is fine.

Hope this helps.
