battery replaced & now w/check engine light/remote key problem

I have a E300 Turbo Diesel (1999) with 68000 miles.

yesterday I replaced the battery after it died....jumped it once and couldn't be jumped again, so i replaced it.

the new battery works fine, so no problem there.

now I have a check engine light thats on and the remote key will not unlock/lock my doors. I have to manually open the door with the key.

additionally, i have played with the gas cap without any results.

any reason why the battery replacement caused the remote key to not function as well as the check engine light to come on?

Any time the CEL is on, read the codes to see what turned it on. It may or may not have anything to do with replacing the battery. Once you know what the CEL code is telling you then you might be able to say that it is because of the battery change. As for the remote not working, check your manual for the resync procedure or the keyless remote. That is odd but may have been caused by the battery being disconnected. You may have to resync all of your seats, sun roof and windows as well...
