Right headlamp/brake light intermittently malfunction

I have a new to me 98 E430, and I have the bulb failure warning displayed when starting the car. I figured out the right brake light was out. Had the car inspected this AM and told the guy testing the car to replace the old bulb. Car passed inspection. Tonite I notice the right headlight is out. I turn off the headlights, then turn them back on. Both work again. Is this the false bulb warning gremlin in the FAQ? Any pointers for me? What causes this?
