I am a proud owner of a w124 and I know a lot of thinks about it. But the w210 is adiffernt animal. Except for the engine.
Questions.
does the 1996 still have the folwing problems: evaporator, head gasket, wiring harness, and spring perches rust?
It is better than w124 on a long run ..am the 70kmiles/year type of guy?
How is the stering rack and pinion comparing to the string box in the w124?

As long as you've gotten all the above mentioned problems out of the way (yes they are common in the W210 particularly the ones with inline 6's) your car will last forever. I somehow prefer the steering in the W210 over the W124 but that might have more to do with my 18 inch setup and sports springs (i like a more comunicative feel).
If you are into doing serious miles i'd also advise you to take a look at the E300 Turbodiesel in the W210 shape. That engine is indestructible.
