I just purchased an '03 W210 4Matic Wagon (first MB for me). Great car (after 1 week), but have a minor question: When I open the door, the interior lights up like a Christmas tree - overhead lights, door lights, etc, but the footwells are dark. I can see what appears to be a light in each footwell, but they are not illuminated - should they be? If so, how can I test?
In my 02 W210 4matic wagon (which I've also had for only a week), there are very subtle lights in all four footwells. They turn on when I open the door. But heck, they are so subtle and dim, I hardly notice they are on.

Firefox is right, the footwell lights are on when the lights are on (I think, unless they are on all of the time, I can only see them at night though) regardless of whether the doors are open, but they are very dim. I assume they're meant for finding stuff on the floor in night driving. Another cool feature is the dim light that shines down from the rearview mirror at night. If it's dark enough, you can read a map with this little light and it's very handy for finding your cellphone/change/whatever on the console at night.

I find that light very cool but haven't found it mentioned in the manual, so I'm curious as to the actual purpose.

Ambient lighting I suppose.
I found it very nice, and comforting when we took a ride from Maryland to New Jersey in an S430. It was mostly night driving as we left early morning, and late night.
Went and sat in my car last night to 'find' these lights. In pitch black they can be seen glowing in the door handles and four footwells, not really noticable with street lights overhead! The footwells come on when the side/headlamps are on. They can be controlled with the dash dimmer switch, make sure this is fully up, maybe this will help. Another good touch: doors lock automatically above 10mph. This can be cancelled if you wish. Who thinks up this cool stuff?!
Well, this is Mercedes. Attention to detail and ergonomics. There are features that are really quite old, like the neumatic door lock mechanism, it's over 30 years old. The dual zone heater I've known from the pontoon era cars. The list goes on and on.
