There are a lot of posts about these...Im just looking for some clear precise info on this. I have a 98 E320, it does have the locking plug on dipstick tube...I believe I have the "non Service" tranny (722.?)< Am I correct? Should I use ONLY MB tranny fluid? What else can I use and what documentation backs it up? Where is best place to but dipstick tool?

The same for Engine oil. I have been told to ONLY use MB approved synthetic with the MB approval # on the back. Well, the "full synth Mobil" says it is approved for MB BUT it does NOT have the "approved" MB Ref.# on the back...What does all of this mean?? I do not mind paying for the MB tranny fluid, but I put a lot of miles on the car and would love to find a SAFE replacement for the MB engine oil.
Any info, documentation, web links etc.would be great!!

Thanks,
S.

Use ONLY the MB trans fluid..and YES service the (SEALED) trans @60K..make sure that you drain the torqueconverter...I have seen first hand what happens when you use a Normal ATF in a late 722 trans...NOT a Pretty site!

Read the owners manual re other oils that one can use..I would recommend Mobil One

Oil Changes are Cheap Insurance!

Purchase the trans dip stick at a MB dealer...and replace the tamper proof plug at the dipstick...

Don't think the manual lists the approved oils since it is a changing list.

See the current list here or get one of these http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=8040569932&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMESE%3AIT&rd=1
