DIY Oil Change Questions from first timer

You guys are just great in answering questions so I decided to change the oil myeself. I have bought the fleece engine oil filter and plan to buy the Topsider oil extractor and Mobil 1 synthetic oil.

Here are my questions

1. How many quarts of oil does the car need (I could not find it in the owners manual?
2. Where exactly is the oil filter? I read that it is on the top somewhere but I could not locate it. Do I have to open the plastic panel on the top to locate the oil filter?

I have a 2001 E320.

Thanks a bunch.

The 3.2L V6 takes 8.5 quarts of oil. You will probably only have to put in 8 quarts. The oil filter is in the front of the engine on the drivers side. You will need an oil filter socket like wrench to take the top off. You will see an octagonal cap for the oil filter. There are orings that should be replaced when you change the filter and they should come with the filter. The top sider has a hose that goes down the dip stick tube. I always use AMSOil instead of Mobil 1 and a high quality fleece filter.

Any boat supply is having hand oil pumps, since this is the only way to change the oil on a boat.
It has garden hose end, since that's how boat dipstic tubes end, so you might have to make an adapter.
I paid around $25 -5 years ago.

Overton's has them on the web. I think they are $45 or so now.
