So I've found a 2001 E320 wagon at an autobroker's lot in town. Car has 48,000 miles with an asking price of $23,900. Black on black with xenons, phone, new michelins, ect, ect.
I know the price is a bit high and it is off the factory warrenty. How durable are these cars? What are the things that tend to break down/need taken care of? I think I can work the price down so that doesn't bother me but I would like to know what to look for.

Alot depends on where you are in the world
and the vehicles exposure to salt, snow, sun and inclement weather. Your profile doesn't indicate.
Look at NADA, Kelly blue book and your local paper.
Take the VIN to your local MB dealer and see if they have records if they're not already a part of the cars documentation.
And finally, take it to an independent MB dealer for evaluation before- not after- your purchase for a thorough evaluation.
Unless you're a trained, skilled automotive tech and can make the evaluation yourself, it's not a time to go cheap.
I'm in Atlanta. When I spoke to the owner of the brokerage he told me the car came from new england, mass I think he said. They're closed today so I am going to go and have a look when there are not annoying sales people.
Check for rust under the door seals and see that all of the recalls were taken care of. Definitely do a pre purchase inspection at a trusted indie mechanic.
