Have been having problems with warm starting issues. Dealer said I needed a new starting module $1,200. It only effected hot starts.
Left garage door up the other night and car would not start. Thought it gelled up. Ran a propane torch over the filter and block, after a while it started and ran fine.
Go to start the car the next morning same problem. It seems like it wants to start, but after the third try it just cranks and cranks. No smoke, nothing.
New MAFS a couple months ago (third one) other than a little lag around 1,500 RPM the car runs fine.
Any ideas? I just changed the filter today and it did not help at all.
I bet you have air in the fuel lines. Try this have someone crank the car and observe the clear fuel lines that go from the injection pump to the fuel filter. My hunch is you will see air in these lines. I assume when you said you changed the filter you are talking about the fuel filter, Did you install a new O-Ring on the portion between the filter and the housing? if not that probably made your problem worse. One or many of your fuel return lines is probably leaking and letting air in. Go to mercedesshop.com or search on this forum; there are tons of topics on fuel leaks on these 606.962 motors.

This started as a hot start only problem. COld start was fine. Dealer said it's only a matter of time before it would not start. Maybe it's just coincidence it happened when I left the door open. Strange that it started after I heated the block.
I did make sure all the o-rings are changed when I install the filter. I do it often as it is cheap insurance against crappy fuel. Don't see any signs of air in the lines. I primed the filter as always and the car has plenty of fuel in it. It almost starts the first time, then it just gets worse and finally just cranks. No signs of fuel leaks either.
A hot diesel that won't run has a fuel problem. Glow plugs aren't even in the diagnosis picture for a hot start. The fuel lines on the OM606 series are well known for leaking. All of the o-ring seals at the junctions are suspect.
Just for diagnostic fun: Try starting after parking in an uphill stance, then later in a downhill stance. I'll bet it is harder to start uphill.
