Is it a common occurance in the e320 4matic to have the bearings go out?
I took in the new E320 for a look over and fix up, they found the typical stuff, but also when the "boot" was removed, they found that the bearings were "scored" and loose and needed to replace the whole hub for $950 in parts.
Are maintenance/repair problems common, or is this a rare occurance?
RE: 2001 E320 AWD with right front bearings problem
Hey, weber.
Is it common? I'd have to think "No", just from hanging out on this and other MB forums (I think this is the first mention of it I've heard).
You could try a search here and on the others, but I'd be surprised if you find any kind of frequency.
That said, the 4-matic adds more complexity and with more complexity comes the possibility of more (and more expensive) failures, but in the end it's still a Benz and their engineering and design is pretty darn good. :)
RE: 2001 E320 AWD with right front bearings problem
I have an 01 E320 4matic with 95,000 mi on it. I have not had any problems with the front end or AWD system at all. I did replace the struts and shocks at about 85,000 mi. They felt like they were getting a little weak. I could have left it alone and it would have been fine.I will say that it is a major job to change the front struts. You have to pull the front axles ect. My car drives and handles as good as it did when it was new.[:)]
RE: 2001 E320 AWD with right front bearings problem
Thanks for both of the reply's, makes me feel better.
Regarding the AWD, I had the shaft done, new tires, alighnment, fuel filter, et al for about 3K. When I drove it home, it has a 4WD kind of hum to the driving sound. I had a G-wagon, and it sounds like it. Is this the normal sound, or is there something I should look for?
RE: 2001 E320 AWD with right front bearings problem
I have no noise at all. The only thing that I have noticed with my AWD is that it has a vibration at about 40-45 mph untill I drive a few miles when it is cold. I noticed this when I test drove the car when it was new.I did test drive a couple other AWD's and found that they all do it. So, it is something that is normal and goes away once the car is warmed up. Other than that there isn't anyting differnt when you drive one that lets you know it is AWD, accept of course when you are on slick roads and you feel like you are on dry pavement. Good luck
