I have this awful high pitched whistle that's coming from my dash, which stops when I turn off the fan. Does anyone know if this is the fan or some seal that is not tight? Is the fan difficult to get too and is it expensive. Will a quick squirt of WD40 help or make the problem worse?
I am having a similar problem with my 97 E320 except I would describe my sound more like a fast chirping (I guess whistle is a good term too, but not real high pitched). It does not vary a whole lot with fan speed but definately goes away when the fan is turned off. The weird thing is that the noise comes and goes with no real consistency. Hopefully someone will respond with a possible solution.
Guys,
This sound is coming from your AC fan, you just have to change resistor that attached to your blow motor fan. I fogot the actual name of this part, check with your local Mercedes parts store, they will know. I had the same problem on my 2000 E320. Good Luck!
This part number is a blower regulator which probably contains a resistor. Did you have a mechanical whistle noise like we do? From what I have read, this regulator is necessary to fix a blower that will not change speeds. My blower changes speeds just fine, I just get this ittermitent whistling or chirping, which sounds mechanical. Can the regulator, an electrical component, cause or make this noise?
Change the regulator and the noise will go away. You are right that its sound like mechanical problem with the blow motor but it is not. I changed the motor twice and the noise would not go away until I change the regulator/switch. This is a common problem with regulator. Change it and the noise will go away.
Remove the panel under the glove compartment, its easy just few screws. You will see the blow motor under glove compartment. Remove few screws that holding the motor and you will see the switch that attached to the motor. If you are handy, you should not have any problems to replace the switch. It just like replacing your cabin filters. Good Luck!
Noise from the regulator is news to me, but then again, I learn a lot about these cars from fora such as this.
Is this a "feature" of the new-style regulator only? Has anyone ever seen this problem with the old-style?
A motor bearing can also make some squeaks, but this would sound like a motor squeaking. Mine made a very faint noise when going around a right turn. A few drops of oil fixed it.
