overheating problem

I was wondering if someone has suggestions here.

It is 1997 E320, AT.

When I drive for about 30min, temp is set around 90c, once I stop and stay still for about 3-4 min, temp starts going all the way to 120, almost RED. The wierd thing is, it is ok if I drive less than 30min, than I can stay still for 15min, and temp is perfect 90c, but over 30 min driving, it overheats. I have to either turn heater on MAX to cool the engine down, or start driving again, as it starts cooling down.
Anyone, has any suggestions. Thermostat problem? Why not overheating sooner?

RE: overheating problem

ok, I see two type of fans. There are 2 smaller once afront of the radiator and 1 big one that is connected to the engine and is behind radiator (looking at the front of the car). The big one is turning. So which one is electrical fan? Sorry, dumb question, but my name says it all. [:)]

RE: overheating problem

The ones in front are the electric ones, My 01 did not have an engine driven fan as yours does. This is controlled by a thermal viscosity drive I believe. That too could be bad. None of this stuff is real expensive but it is very important with an engine that contains lots of aluminum. Get it fixed ASAP or sooner

RE: overheating problem

See if the electric fans in front of the radiator are comming on or check to see if the belt that goes from the drive side fan to other one has not broken or become jammed. You need air flow over the radiator or the temp will climb up. You may need to change you coolant or have your radiator flushed is see if it is getting plugged up.

RE: overheating problem

Just to give update top those that may wonder. Took it to MB shop, they replaced thermostat since it was opening at 97c, and replaced the fan clutch, since it wasn't efficient and not enough airflow. New thermostat opens around 85-90c, and my temp is now just around 87c.
