2001E320W large single blade windshield wiper smears!
I replace rubber insert with Mercedes insert every few months. Dealer has also tried bending wiper arm to apply more pressure to blade. I also tried aftermarket blade. No success. Problem seems to be not enough pressure applied uniformly over wiper length resulting in smearing in upper quadrant of sweep-right in line of sight. Dangerous driving in rainstorms. Suggestions appreciated.
Never had this problem when I had my 01 E Class. Found the wiper excellent and in fact I liked it better than my 05 W211 wipers. Perhaps you need a new arm on it. There is not much else that can effect it
There is also a very strong spring in there, it's possible that has weakened over time. It's also possible someone was being a jack**s and purposefully yanked on your wiper arm at some point.
It's got to be very expensive, but I think it would be worth replacing the arm and spring.
Also check the condition of your windshield. If it has many fine scratches in it from dry wiping then water will get in the scratches and distort your vision. You may be able to buff out the scratches with cerium oxide.
Typically I purchase all replacement parts from OEM sources. In this case though I found a manufacturer that makes a superior product.
The name of the company is SilBlade at the website of the same name. They manufacture a silicone-based blade that doesn't seem to overload the wiper transmission and keep my windshield streak free. I have had the same blade on the car for almost a year with no degradation of performance. They also offer a winter blade but I'm not sure I would use one because of the flimsy 210 wiper transmission
Best part about it they cost about the same as dealer parts.
I have the same reoccuring problem every couple of months. I have tried everything. But the
dealer glady sells me the part for a mere $35 because they just dont sell the blade anymore i was told you need the whole piece. How nice of them.
I had streaking and chattering. While I waited for
my bosch blades to arrive, I couldn't stand it any
longer and applied liberal dose of silicone (out of
a spray can) to the blade. I let it absorb for about
5 minutes and applied again onto kleenex. Then I used
see-saw motion, letting this work into the blade. did
did for about 5 minutes. It came back to life and not
only did the streaking stop, the chattering ceased and
it has been an amazing performer for the past year....on
the old blade. I never had to swap out for the new one
yet.
Methinks the silicone had moisturizing qualities and
softened the hardening rubber, allowing it to become
soft....and more pliable again.
Even during cruddy mist (not rainy) conditions, I
figure it will emit a squeel, a grunt, or a chatter....
but noooo, it remains eerily silent.
About a month after buying a new blade, I was disappointed that the blade was streaking again during a heavy rain. I stopped at a gas station and used a paper towel to clean both the rubber blade and the windshield. Back to new.
