I had my car in the shop for an o2 sensor replacement and the service advisor recommended that I get the brakes redone, both front and rear pads and rotors. Also quoted about $1150 for it. I have 40,500 miles currently, but replaced the front pads at 22,000 miles. My question is, I was ready to replace the pads but do I need to replace the rotors too?? It was my understanding that as long as I kept the pads from wearing out and grinding into the rotors that they would last a lot longer. Thanks in advance for your help.
Get yer car outta there! If you don't want to do the brakes yourself take it to someone who will at least kiss you first.[;)]
Any decent shop can do them for probably half that price, or ask others for a recommendation for a good indie, you'll need one sooner or later.
That said, if you like and trust your dealer, that's a little high for a benz dealer, but not stunningly so.
Also, the only reason you need to replace the rotors is if they are warped or are worn past their service limits. I'd throw that as a pointed question to the service advisor, it'll be a good benchmark of whether he's fibbing to you just to make a quota.
Just so you know, the parts for this are under $350, so you can see there's lots of profit in there for the dealer.
