Rattling noise under car - cats replaced - check engine light
Just a follow up to thank all of you: originally thought the noise coming from under my '02 E320 4matic wagon (61,000 miles, I am in the USA) was a loose exhuast pipe but my husband put it on the lift & found nothing.
When my "check engine light came on while excelerating, I checked the forum for info & had my husband take another look: sure enough, it was the catalytic converters on both sides. Took the car into the stealership & they did the work - no charge - since it was under 7yrs/80,000mi.
HOWEVER, they said the "check engine" light was due to codes PO300, PO301, PO302, and said the plug wires were bad and wanted $500 to replace. They also wanted $600 to tighten/replace "loose ball joints".
We said NO THANKS & picked the car up today, but the check engine light is now off, yet the engine still bogs upon aceleration. What gives? (BTW, we replaced the MAF & air filter a month ago.)

Have you changed the fuel filter? Also you may want to change the spark plugs with 60K miles on it. They say that they are good for 100K but it might be worth it to change them.
I had to have my cats replaced at 30K miles for rattling. The federal law is 8 years or 80K miles for replacement.

Just had my ball joints replaced for $300. Your $tealership wants way too much for the plug wires. The plug wires on your car are extremely short, and there's no reason why they should be bad. The tune-up interval is 100k miles. If you're mechanically inclined, you can replace the plugs and wires yourself for cheap.

Great advice, thanks, E-Klasse!
Ordered Bosch plugs, plug wires (one wire was bad, so my husband is replacing them all) and a fuel filter online from http://www.thepartsbin.com/ ..ordered them Thursday afternoon and they were here the next day! Gotta love the internet. Total cost - free shipping over $50 - was $303.
I also got a CEL (trouble code) reader off of Ebay for $60, which included a code manual. It will also clear the check engine light after displaying the code 5 times.
