Hi I've recently been testing my 1999 E240 and discovered that the acceleration and top speed was much poorer than I expected.
The top speed I reached while on a long straight for about 2 minutes was 140km/h. When I used the kickdown switch the speed fell and while the revs hit 6000-7000, I kept slowing down. Is this normal? Should the top speed be higher? Even when not using the kickdown switch?
Firstly, it is rare to find another E240 owner on this site as they are all Americans and I do not think the E240 was sold there ( engine too small!) I have a 2000 E240 and your speeds seem very low. I have not been above 110mph but the car had plenty of life in her at that speed. I see your post is quite old, did you get the problem solved?
Hey, thanks for replying. You're right, there aren't many E240 owners here, good to hear from you.
Unfortunately I still haven't solved the problem.
With regards to adding oil, that fixed another problem I had. The car wouldn't leave 1st gear, it was stuck in "limp home mode". I discovered the car had very little oil. It was fixed by adding oil.
I've now over filled the oil, and haven't got around to draining it. I tried to get up to max speed when the oil was over filled. Perhaps when I drain the oil it may reach higher than 140km/h.
Also with regards to the kick down switch, why doesn't the car respond in increasing speed, but the revs hit 6000?
