Both of the rear window regulators of my 2000 E320 stopped working on the same day. I read through most of the posts about regulators in this forum. All are very helpful but few mentioned how to drill off the rivets. Sounds like a easy job for most of the people here. But I found it very difficult. I drilled through the center of the rivet using 1/8 drill bit. But it does not seem to get off. I tried to drill off the head part of the rivet, but did not feel right using my normal drilling tool. Can someone with successful experience give me some tips on it? Thanks a lot.
RE: Rear regulator replace: stuck at rivet removal
Can you post a picture of where you are now with the rivet removal?
It sounds like it is still holding on "by a thread". Your larger drill bit may be just spinning the rivet at this point.
Try clamping a small visegrip on the back to keep it stationary, then drill the head off. If that doesn't work, you could try crushing the remaining shell inward and then tapping it through with a drift punch ( or thereabouts )

RE: Rear regulator replace: stuck at rivet removal
Once you drill through, you might have to break away the outer edge of the rivet. It might still be hanging on even if the center is gone.

RE: Rear regulator replace: stuck at rivet removal
Thank you guys for the kindly help. I drilled out the rivets successfully last night. I first drill a small hole at the center, then used a bigger bit to make the hole bigger at the head part. When the head is thin enough, I used a plier to pull the head off. Then I drive the remaining of the rivet out to the other side. My right side regulator is replaced and working well after 2 hours work. I am looking forward to fixing the left side tonight. I think I can finish it in 1 hour this time. Thanks again for your ideas.
