RE: Spring top mount failure

I have just purchased a 1997 E320, 1 month as an owner, and I have now identified the same issue in the left spring mount is totally rusted out. I took it to the place I purchased it from, and they wanted to fix it but I called the MB Corporate office...I have had my car in a authorized dealership for repairs and it has taken two weeks. MB only agreed to pay for the repair but not the labor, and the place I purchased picked up the rest of the tab. However, MB wants me to sign a release agreement that excludes them from any further liability...if one goes the other may right? When I even called about this they knew exactly what I was talking about, and after reading on here it is very scary...my car is being repaired but I have not submitted the release. Thoughts?

It is just matter of time. Other side will go as well. I hear MB changed design on spring perch starting with 2001 model.

RE: Spring top mount failure

1998 c230. I just lost my left side this afternoon. MB has the part for 14.80 I'm going to stack 2, and seal it myself. It's sad to see such poor engineering. It will be engineered and assembled better out of my garage than it was in Stuttgart.[img]

RE: Spring top mount failure

I just finished fixing it this evening. Putting in the spring was a real bitch I might add. Anyway, I spoke with the MB HQ in Jersey yesterday SEP 25, 05. They said there is no recall on the 1998 c230. They wanted me to bring it in for an inspection, but didn't guarantee that they'd pay for the repair. The tow would be at my own expense as well. I decided to fix it myself. 8 Hours of grinding and welding later on something that should not have failed in the first place really sucked, but it's better than having given MB $1,000 to fix it. I feel MB should have been more occumidating and more honest about which, by now is their obvious knowledge about this problem. Obviously their approach is clearly AD HOC. I hope their gamble pays off. I'd hate to see somebody die as a result of this obvious and persistent negligence. I couldn't afford the leaving it at the dealership for multiple days, so I ruined my weekend instead.

RE: Spring top mount failure

does something look fishy here. Why is my perch black, when the one above is covered and is the same color as the sealant "grey". Is my problem a failure of a recall replacement? I wouldn't doubut it, as my replacement part purchased from MB is the same thicknss and color (black) as the original. I purchased the car used 3 years ago at 51.5k miles. I did a car fax on it and it only had one owner before me. It had no problems. As you can probably tell.....i'm pissed.

RE: Spring top mount failure

(Bump on this newer thead as well..)
Any recall numbers or other TSB numbers that we can give MB or the dealer to help encourage MB to pick up the bill?

I just went out and looked at my e 320 4 matic. Im not a expert and Im somewhat new a fixing my own vehicles, ( alot of them were not worth working on) but my front springs have a perch similar to the ones posted but I have a shock that runs through the spring that is welded to the top of the wheel well and attaches to the A arm at the same point as the spring, the perch has a little larger bracket. It is still thin metal and looks like it could be better but is this a design change in the 4 matic or am I seeing things?
