Need Help: CD Changer install (No Changer message after installing changer)

I got my MC3010 yesterday and since I had already located the wiring in advance, all I had to go was to plug the sucker in. I did that and when I turned the head unit and pressed the CD button, I got NO CD CHANGER on the display.
I struggled with the damn thing for half an hour and finally gave up.

Now, the changer is powered up. I can eject the CD magazine and the electric motor turns and pushes it out as it should.

Is there anything I am missing?

Please help. I am going on a trip out of town tomorrow and would love to have this thing installed before I hit the road.

Thanks

Paul

I am not sure your CD player is Fiber Optic if your car is year '97 model. You might have fiber optic version of CD player. Check it out.

Sorry for the confusion. This is for my 2002 E320 4Matic. It is fiber optic.

Thanks

Go to your battery. Disconnect NEG cable from the
post and say ABRACADABRA 3x. Connect cable. Power
on and try again. This might just do the trick.

Normally they work out of the box. I did see a note on my instruction sheet that it has to be configured into the DB loop. My dealer did it on my 01, did not make any difference. Do you have everything plugged in including the "fiber" I have a MC3010 in my wagon. Do you have Command? The instruction sheet says " vehicle configured at the factory for the CD changer only, except with vehicles with command" what ever that means
Instruction sheet P-I82.64/142A 01/02 CTEL and Changer install 210 Wagon
Two plugs 3 pole, and fiber cable, suspension to "V"

There were reports that some models may need to get dealer activation. I have the same changer and it was plug and play, no prob. If you got it on Ebay, it could be the unit. Good luck & try posting this on the audio & telematics forum.

RE: Need Help: CD Changer install (No Changer message after installing changer)

I think it is the cables. I have a silly question. There are two slots on the changer. I know one is for to power it up and the other one, I don't of. I easily located the power socket but for some odd reason I am not able to locate the "other one". I spent a lot of time and took apart the entire left wheel well cover and went thru each and every wire out there but to my luck, was not able to find it.
The changer is powered after I plugged in the power plug as I can hear the motor as it ejects the catridge out when I push on the eject button.

I am assuming that my car has the command system. Is it the integrated phone, radio, SOS..etc?

Also, as someone here suggested to take the negative terminal of the cable off and plug it back in. I did that and now I have two malfunctions. ABS and Airbag visit workshop errors. Did the reset of the computer caused it? I am lost.
Any suggestions?

I am so fed up with this changer issue and am thinking of getting the Audio 10 (A170 820 03 86)MF2910. If I do have command in my car do you think I will be able to just plug and play with this particular model?

Thanks

Paul

RE: Need Help: CD Changer install (No Changer message after installing changer)

I so sorry that my suggestion cause you more grief. I've
used the battery disconnect on two 1999s and one 2000 MY
with no electronic problems after.

The fiber cable should be BRIGHT ORANGE, twin lead,
terminating into a flat black plastic fitting about the
size of your thumb nail, 1/4" thick.

(I have been using the Audio 10 for 6 mos and have been
quite pleased. I also kept the changer, using the same
MC3010 model as you have)

No problem Raymond. Thats how we learn:)

I am not able to find the second socket (fiber optic?)

So there are two different sockets right?

I will do some more investigation tonight. If not, I am getting the in dash system. My wife hates the changers anyway:)

Thanks

Paul

RE: Need Help: CD Changer install (No Changer message after installing changer)

here is the rear of the MC-3010. so you should be able
to get an idea the size of the plugs.
http://waltermitty.net/mb/MC-3010.jpg

here is a photo of the fiber optic cable/termination.
http://waltermitty.net/mb/fo%20fitting.jpg

just a thought: go to your head unit and slide it out
a scootch. you can see the fiber cable plugged into...
and exiting the HU, yes? if so, the other end has GOT
to be someplace in the vehicle.

verify with dealer, if you can (or any other 2002 E320
owner here) that factory install of CD changer is
indeed in left rear of the vehicle, in trunk. if so,
the factory installed FO cable has *got* to be back
there...nearby.

p.s. the orange fiber harness may not be loose and
dangling out there for you to find easily. in two
instances, it was tightly and neatly tucked away with
another bundle of wiring up high along the left..and
behind the rear wheel well.

if you reach up there and find other cabling, it
should be zip-tied with the bundle of wiring. it may
extend nearly all the way back to furthermost rear of
the sheet metal...and then doubles back along the
wiring harness.

were you able to get good lighting back there and know
for sure you have good view of all that is behind
the trunk liner?

caution: (!!) handle the FO harness carefully. don't
kink, sharply bend, and be sure that it doesn't get
cut/nicked along any sheet metal edging as you pull it
through into the trunk.
