W210 model have been bread and butter for MBZ but it has had some bad history as well. Some will swear never to buy another MBZ but most will buy again. MBZ did, for sure, fail in controlling its quality in factory, with design and with parts suppliers.
MAF, Harmonic balancer, transmission sensor, door motor regulator, spring perch, rust, cup holder, common bulb failures, steering noise, crank case positioning sensor, etc. have been most common problems. Not all cars had same problems!
Make sure you check for those items. Most of problems listed can be verified just by making sure on board diagnostic says "No Malfunction"
The car drives very good and gets excellent gas mileage. I get unbelievable 30 miles to a gallon on freeway driving. Good luck.
Dont forget the Cracked dash / Defective fuel sending units / Rocking front seat frames / A/C evap temp sensor / Brake lite switch / leaking rear diff / Leaking rear struts / As a Ex MB Tech We only saw the Bad ones...I Have done Most of the Above on my 2000 W210 Estate..Bought it new..and I Love it..after a few mods!
Shop around on the warranty! Do NOT buy it from the dealer!!!
Only thing wrong with my 210 Wagon is the common bulb failures. I spilt coffee on the center consol which cost $4,500, but all the Benz mechanics said this is one of the best Benz's made. 2 of the mechanics I spoke to had the same car.
I have a 2001 4matic wagon and love it, but it does have it's problems. MBUSA paid to have the whole engine re-done at 60k miles (I was going through a quart of oil every 500 miles). But aside from this (and, hey, it's like I've got a new engine for free at 60k) I love the car. As far as the wagon goes, it's one of the best for cargo space and dividers/hooks/nets are great.
How did you get MBUSA to redo your engine for you at 60k miles. Was the vechicle out of warranty or did you have an extended warranty? The reason I ask is just in case something like that happens to one of us here.
Haha thanks a lot 300CD -- It's been fun over the last few years figuring out which cars we like and work best for us. It sounds like you're going through some of the same stuff with your 300 as we are with the 560...
With regard to the engine thing, Bill Ditmire (At Ditmire Motorworks) went out of his way for us and figured out how to get MBUSA to pay for it. We didn't really ask questions, but he knew what to do about it and that was the bottom line. Apparently it's a problem they know about, but I'm not sure which models were affected and I actually think it's a random smattering of the V6s.
