Well, maybe not the keys, but actually the ignition switch itself.[:(!]
I went to start the car and the key portion that unlocks (and locks) doors works, the key slips into the recepticle (well, so does a ballpoint pen) and the radio starts up if it was left on, but the key won't turn.
I took it out, tried my wife's key, and same issue -- no turning. I cleaned the red lens on the key and the ignition lock door, but still no dice.
The Auto Club scratched around inside under the door with a Bic pen and got it to work and I drove home.
When trying the key after shutting off the car -- once again, no turning. It was as if I was using someone elses keys in error. The Auto Club tech suggested cleaning out the area under the little door with a cotton swab. Huh! [:0]
Anyone tackled a challenge like this? Ideas? Solutions?
My Denali can respond to the remote from across the parking lot. The Benz SmartKey is lucky to respond from 10 feet away.
Have you ever tried the "pointing the remote into your open mouth" or the "holding the remote on your chin" while pressing the button. It actually doubles the range while your friends are laughing at you.[:o)]
Ignition switch :$98
New Smart Key for my car<-------- ,$135
Getting laughed at while the peasents' start their Civics from down the block, while you need to be adjacent
to your brand new Mercedes:priceless

Nice to be back,MJ,I've been having problems, and have ordered some 'O2' sensors that I'm supposed to be getting today. The mechanic says the problem is that I'm not gettting the right mixture of air to my engine. This is causing the 'check engine' to appear on my dash, and each time I come to a stop (hit the brakes at a traffic light) the engine revs, and the cars starts shaking like it's possessed. I bought two parts for the car as recommended by MB 'specialists' totalling $1200
and my car stills acts like it belongs on a Hollywood
set.....[:(!]
Gee, I was hoping a new ignition switch would necessitate new keys too.
My copy has broken the tab that locks in the emergency metal key -- so I have a plastic tie around the SmartKey holding it in place.
It sort of sounds incredible that an ignition switch would be cheaper than keys[:0]
I am not a big fan of SmartKeys [:(!]
The good news buy a remote from E bay, they wont work and can not be recodeded. Then take your key out of the old remote and push the little gray tab inside the opening the remote will come apart (just like changing battery) slide your old remote into the donor remote case. I had a tie wrap on mine, dont pay a lot of money since the smart keys are useless unless coded to the car.
