RE: Technology
The 2001 E-Class had the multifunction steering wheel. Why settle for a trip computer when you can get navigation. They would rather sell you COMAND, navigation, than give you a simple trip computer.
With each new redesign, the model gets more features. It is rare for the company to go back and add them to the older models. The new model C-Class came out before the redesigned E-Class so during the overlap time, the C may have better base feature than the E. The E got a face lift after 99 with some features added for the 2000+ models. But with the W211 up and comming, they were not going to change too much.
Also, Mercedes makes some stripped versions of the E-Class for economy reasons and for fleet use as taxies and police vehicles. You get cloth and manual seats along with a cheaper climate control system to save money.

I have to say that the e-class is still the best, but here in Australia a 1997 VT Holden Calais had most of the features that mercedes didnt have standart (Multifunction steering, wheel auto climate control, electric seats) the mercedes E-280 costs 108,000 Australian dollars while the Holden calais(Ugly looking) was only 50k range?
it seems that mercedes in australia is learning from a couple of mistakes they made.
recently they have added the parktronic and thermotronic as standard features to compete with the luxury ford and holdens.
